In December, South Koreans spent a record amount of time using generative artificial intelligence (AI) services. Data from WiseappURetailUGoods revealed that smartphone users in South Korea logged a total of 900 million minutes on platforms like ChatGPT, A., WRTN, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and Claude. This figure is more than eight times the 110 million minutes recorded in the same month the previous year.
OpenAI's ChatGPT emerged as the most popular service, attracting 6.82 million users. SK Telecom Co.'s AI assistant, A., followed with 2.45 million users. WRTN, developed by South Korean startup Wrtn Technologies, had 2.32 million users. Other services included Perplexity with 590,000 users, Microsoft Copilot with 310,000, and Claude with 120,000 users.
WRTN is an AI aggregator, Perplexity is a global AI search engine, and Claude is an AI assistant from U.S. firm Anthropic. These services have contributed to the significant increase in AI usage in South Korea.
