Tibetan leader highlights Tibet's struggle, role of global advocacy
Sikyong Penpa Tsering Highlights Tibet's Global Awareness Efforts in Barcelona
During his official tour in Europe, Sikyong Penpa Tsering, the leader of Tibet's Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), addressed the Tibetan community in Barcelona. He emphasized the importance of raising global awareness about Tibet's political situation. Tsering praised the Dalai Lama for his leadership in keeping the Tibetan cause visible internationally for over 65 years.
Sikyong highlighted the significance of international advocacy, mentioning the US government's adoption of the Tibet-China Conflict Resolution Act. This legislation calls for a peaceful resolution to the Tibet-China issue and urges China to respect Tibet's cultural and religious autonomy. He noted that such achievements result from years of effort by Tibetan support groups and international policymakers.
Regarding dialogue with China, Sikyong expressed cautious optimism but acknowledged the uncertainty of meaningful negotiations. He reiterated the CTA's commitment to the Middle Way Approach, seeking genuine autonomy for Tibet within China. However, he stressed that Tibet's freedom struggle cannot rely solely on dialogue with the Chinese government.
Despite international pressure, the Chinese government continues to reject any form of independence or autonomy for Tibet, maintaining strict control over the region. The CTA, functioning as the Tibetan government-in-exile, continues to advocate for Tibetan rights.
