Recently, a US military aircraft arrived in Amritsar, India, carrying over 100 Indian citizens who were allegedly in the US illegally. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed that while the US has the right to deport individuals staying illegally, the method of deportation was "unnecessary." He suggested that deportations should occur on commercial or civilian planes, emphasizing a more "humane manner." Tharoor noted that over 1100 Indians were deported under the Biden administration in 2024.
Tharoor highlighted the need for an updated immigration bill in India, as the current one from 1983 is outdated. He mentioned that the government has been promising a new bill since 2016, but it has yet to materialize. Tharoor also criticized reports of Indian migrants being handcuffed during deportation, calling it "totally unacceptable." He urged India to take a stand similar to some Latin American countries that refuse military aircraft and handcuffing.
In a separate issue, Tharoor commented on the vandalism of the residence of Bangladesh's founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in Dhaka. He described the incident as tragic and shameful, acknowledging that while it is an internal affair of Bangladesh, India can express its regrets.
