In Islamabad's Bhara Kahu area, the once beautiful Shahpur Phulgran park has become a waste disposal site, causing distress among locals. The park, previously maintained by the Capital Development Authority (CDA), was a vibrant space for community activities but is now covered in garbage.
Located at the intersection of Bhara Kahu Expressway and Murree Road, the park is overshadowed by the expressway and surrounded by waste. Residents, including retired public servant Sultan Sher Raja, are frustrated and demand immediate action to restore the park. Raja claims that the CDA outsourced waste management to a contractor who began dumping trash in the park, including waste from nearby Murree city.
Local school teacher Humera Ashfaq described the situation as unbearable, citing the foul smell, rodents, and stray dogs. She emphasized the importance of parks for air quality and public health. A report by the Institute of Urbanism states that the CDA collects only 60-70% of the city's waste, leaving much to accumulate in open spaces. Despite attempts to contact the CDA, no comment has been provided by the Sanitation Directorate.
