S Jaishankar Discusses India-Italy Relations and Global Issues in Rome

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently shared his insights on various global matters during an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. He emphasized the importance of India-Italy relations, the dynamics with China and the European Union, and other global developments.

India's Approach to Global Relations

When asked about China's influence in the region, Jaishankar stated, "My life doesn't revolve around another country. My life revolves around my interests. My interests are to see a stable region, a more cooperative and prosperous one." He highlighted the need for countries to collaborate based on mutual interests rather than external pressures.

Strengthening India-Italy Ties

Jaishankar expressed a positive outlook on India-Italy relations, mentioning the Joint Strategic Action Plan announced during the G20 Summit. He noted the shared regional interests and cooperation from the Mediterranean to the Indian Ocean, emphasizing Italy's support in India's engagement with the European Union.

India-EU Trade Relations

Discussing India-EU trade ties, Jaishankar acknowledged the potential for growth, noting that the EU is India's largest trade partner and a significant investor. He pointed out the complexities in negotiations due to non-trade issues but expressed optimism about reaching a mutually beneficial agreement.

Impressions of the Trump 2.0 Administration

Jaishankar shared his views on the Trump 2.0 administration, highlighting the familiarity with many team members, including the nominated Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. He noted the good relationship India had with President Trump during his first term.

Jaishankar is currently in Italy for the G7 Foreign Minister's Meeting, where he engaged in high-level discussions with counterparts from the US, Ukraine, Japan, and other countries.
