New Delhi, India - The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president Rajeev Shukla has defended the facilities at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. The stadium faced criticism during the second Test match between India and Bangladesh, where two days of play were abandoned despite no rain during playing hours.
Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali suggested that no future Test matches should be held in Kanpur. In response, Shukla highlighted the historical significance of the 80-year-old stadium, calling it a 'heritage ground.' He stated, 'Criticism is one thing which we are used to in the administration of the BCCI in cricket. But everything is being criticised.'
Shukla explained that the heavy rain before the match days caused the abandonment, not the facilities. He emphasized that no match had been abandoned in Kanpur before and that high-level technology to manage rainwater is now being implemented in newer stadiums.
Shukla also mentioned ongoing discussions with the Uttar Pradesh government and the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) to improve the stadium's rainwater drainage system. He noted that the land is owned by the UP government, but the UPCA is responsible for its upkeep.
Shukla concluded by saying that rain is a natural factor and that Kanpur and Green Park should not be blamed for it. He expressed optimism about improving the stadium's conditions soon.
