India and Russia Strengthen Ties: Joint Meetings on Counter-Terrorism and UN Issues
During a visit to Moscow from December 19 to 20, Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West) of India's Ministry of External Affairs, co-chaired the 13th India-Russia Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism and the 6th round of consultations on United Nations-related issues. These meetings were held with Sergey Vershinin, Russia's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, and other officials from both countries.
Counter-Terrorism Cooperation
In the Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism, India and Russia shared their experiences in combating terrorism, including cross-border terrorism and extremism. They agreed to enhance cooperation to tackle radicalization and terror financing. Discussions also covered global and regional terrorist threats and the misuse of new technologies for terrorism. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening counter-terrorism efforts on bilateral and multilateral platforms.
United Nations Consultations
During the consultations on UN-related issues, India and Russia exchanged views on regional and global developments, focusing on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and its reform. Russia reiterated its support for India as a permanent member of a reformed UNSC.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to visit India in 2025, following an invitation from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This will be Putin's first visit to India since the Ukraine-Russia conflict began in 2022. India continues to advocate for peace and diplomacy in resolving the conflict.
