New Delhi [India], June 27: Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, along with other opposition leaders, met Speaker Om Birla in his chamber in Parliament. This was the first meeting after Om Birla, an MP from Kota, was elected as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha.

Meeting Details

Congress MP KC Venugopal stated that the meeting was a courtesy visit from Rahul Gandhi to thank the Speaker after being declared the Leader of Opposition. Venugopal also commented on the President’s address, noting that it lacked new content and expectations for various groups in the country.

Rahul Gandhi’s Statement

After assuming his new role, Rahul Gandhi posted on X, thanking Congress President Kharge and other leaders for their support. He promised to raise the voice of every Indian in Parliament, protect the Constitution, and hold the NDA government accountable.

Significance of the Leader of Opposition

The Lok Sabha did not have a Leader of Opposition for the past 10 years due to no opposition party securing the required seats. The Leader of Opposition is a member of crucial committees and selection bodies for statutory positions.

Parliament Sessions

The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha began on June 24 and will end on July 3. The 264th Session of Rajya Sabha will run from June 27 to July 3. President Murmu is scheduled to address a joint sitting of both houses on June 27.
