Congress leader Imran Pratapgarhi expressed that it is a 'happy moment' as Rahul Gandhi is elected as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the 18th Lok Sabha. This ends a 10-year period without an opposition leader in the Lower House since 2014.
Rahul Gandhi, who is the Congress MP from Raebareli, was chosen for this role. He won from both Raebareli and Wayanad constituencies in the recent Lok Sabha elections but decided to keep Raebareli. Priyanka Gandhi will now contest from Wayanad.
Rahul Gandhi will be part of important parliamentary committees such as Public Accounts, Public Undertakings, and Estimates, and will also be involved in selecting heads of key statutory bodies like the Central Vigilance Commission and the Central Information Commission.
Imran Pratapgarhi highlighted that even non-political people wanted Rahul Gandhi to be the LoP, and his acceptance by everyone in the opposition is commendable. The Congress party improved its tally to 100 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, making it the second-largest party.
Rahul Gandhi's new role comes just before the election for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. He took the oath as a Member of Parliament with a copy of the Constitution in his hands.
