Rahul Gandhi and Congress MPs Discuss Waqf Amendment Bill and Other Issues in Delhi Meeting
New Delhi, August 8: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, along with other party MPs, attended a meeting of Congress Lok Sabha MPs at the Parliament House Annexe in Delhi. The meeting was held ahead of the introduction of the Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament, which Congress and other INDIA alliance parties oppose.
The meeting also covered various ongoing issues, including the Bangladesh crisis, China issues, and Supreme Court judgments. Rahul Gandhi was seen arriving with Congress MPs Gaurav Gogoi, Manickram Tagore, and others.
Deputy Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi, stated, "We discussed different issues - be it the Bangladesh issue, regarding China, judgments of the Supreme Court, and today's business of the Parliament. It was a positive discussion, and he encouraged us all to raise the issues of the people."
Earlier, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala criticized the opposition for opposing the Waqf Amendment Bill, calling it a pro-transparency and pro-good-governance bill. He accused the opposition of being pro-land grabbers rather than pro-Muslim.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also criticized the BJP-led government, alleging that the amendments in the Waqf Bill were in the interest of the BJP and demanded a written guarantee that Waqf Board's lands would not be sold.
Congress MPs KC Venugopal and Hibi Eden submitted notices to oppose the introduction of the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, in the Lok Sabha. The Samajwadi Party will also oppose the bill.
The BJP-led government plans to introduce the Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, to amend the Waqf Act, 1995. The bill aims to address issues related to the powers of State Waqf Boards, registration and survey of waqf properties, and removal of encroachments. Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju will introduce the bill in Lok Sabha.
Additionally, Kiren Rijiju will introduce The Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2024, which seeks to repeal the Mussalman Wakf Act, 1923. The Waqf Amendment Bill, 2024, also proposes renaming the Waqf Act, 1995, as the Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995, and aims to ensure that the creation of Waqf-alal-aulad does not deny inheritance rights to women.
