Nepal: Court orders release of Ex-Dy CM Lamichhane in 'cooperative scam' case
Rabi Lamichhane Released on Bail Amid Cooperative Scam Allegations

On Sunday, the Rupandehi District Court in Nepal ordered the release of Rabi Lamichhane, a former Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, on bail. Justice Prahladkumar Yogi set the bail at 10 million Nepali Rupees. Lamichhane, founder of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party, faces charges of embezzling funds from the Supreme Cooperative in Butwal.
This is the third court to grant him bail, following similar decisions by the Pokhara and Kathmandu District Courts. The Pokhara court set bail at 6.5 million Nepali Rupees for embezzlement from the Suryadarshan Cooperative, while the Kathmandu court set it at 6 million Nepali Rupees for the Swarnalakshmi Cooperative case.
Lamichhane and 38 others, including former Gorkha Media Network officials, are accused of misappropriating 1.199 billion Nepali Rupees from the Swarnalakshmi Cooperative. The funds were allegedly diverted to the now-defunct Galaxy 4K Television, where Lamichhane was managing director before entering politics in 2022.
Authorities are investigating cooperative fraud across multiple districts, including Butwal, Chitwan, and Parsa, focusing on systematic embezzlement of funds.
