Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei – Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Brunei marks a significant milestone in the 40-year-old diplomatic relationship between India and Brunei. This visit highlights the growing friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
Key Events During the Visit
During his visit, PM Modi will engage in delegation-level talks, sign and exchange several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), and be hosted for an official lunch by the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah. This is the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Brunei, making it a special occasion for both countries.
Upon his arrival, PM Modi was given a ceremonial welcome and thanked Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah for welcoming him at the airport. The official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, described the visit as ‘special’ and shared an overview of PM Modi’s program.
Inauguration of the New Chancery
Earlier today, PM Modi inaugurated the new Chancery of the High Commission of India in Bandar Seri Begawan. The chancery complex integrates traditional Indian motifs and lush tree plantations, using elegant claddings and durable Kota stones. The design pays homage to India’s rich cultural heritage while creating a tranquil atmosphere.
During the inauguration, PM Modi lit a lamp, unveiled a plaque, and interacted with Indian community members. He appreciated their contributions as a living bridge between the two countries, strengthening bilateral ties.
Visit to Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque
As part of his historic visit, PM Modi also visited the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in Bandar Seri Begawan.
Indian Community in Brunei
The first phase of Indians arriving in Brunei started with the discovery of oil in the 1920s. Currently, approximately 14,000 Indians reside in Brunei, contributing significantly to the healthcare and education sectors.
PM Modi had an endearing interaction with a girl child who showed him a painting featuring the Tricolour and the Prime Minister. The gathering, waving the Tricolour, cheered for the Prime Minister as he reciprocated their feelings.
India-Brunei Relations
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Brunei is an important partner in India’s ‘Act East’ Policy and Indo-Pacific Vision. The two countries enjoy a friendly relationship marked by mutual respect and understanding on bilateral and multilateral issues. After his visit to Brunei, PM Modi will travel to Singapore on September 4-5.
