Prime Minister Modi's Historic Visit to Guyana
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guyana, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 56 years. He was warmly welcomed at the airport by Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali and over a dozen cabinet ministers. The President greeted PM Modi with a hug and exchanged pleasantries.
Ceremonial Welcome
Upon his arrival in Georgetown, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome and a Guard of Honour. During his visit, he is scheduled to address a special session of Guyana's parliament and participate in the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit with Caribbean leaders.
Strengthening Ties
The visit comes at the invitation of President Irfaan Ali, who was a chief guest at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in January 2023. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the growing high-level interactions between India and Guyana, emphasizing their longstanding developmental partnership in health, connectivity, and renewable energy.
Collaborative Projects
India has contributed to Guyana's development by supplying an ocean-going ferry and two HAL 228 aircraft. Solar lighting has been provided to 30,000 households in indigenous communities. Additionally, 800 Guyanese students have studied in India under the ITEC program.
Future Opportunities
During the visit, PM Modi will engage in talks with President Ali, exploring opportunities for collaboration in hydrocarbons, healthcare, education, and defense. Guyana is recognized as the fastest-growing economy in the world, presenting numerous partnership opportunities for India.
