United States President Donald Trump has announced new tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China. A 25% tariff will be applied to imports from Canada and Mexico, with a 10% tariff on Canadian energy and Chinese goods. This decision is part of Trump's efforts to address illegal immigration and drug smuggling, including fentanyl, into the US.
Trump stated that these tariffs are implemented under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to protect American citizens. He emphasized his commitment to fulfilling a campaign promise to stop illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
"Today, I have implemented a 25% Tariff on Imports from Mexico and Canada (10% on Canadian Energy), and a 10% additional Tariff on China. This was done through the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) because of the major threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs killing our Citizens, including fentanyl. We need to protect Americans, and it is my duty as President to ensure the safety of all. I made a promise on my Campaign to stop the flood of illegal aliens and drugs from pouring across our Borders, and Americans overwhelmingly voted in favour of it," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded by stating that Canada is prepared to respond "forcefully but reasonably" to any tariffs imposed by the US.
