Polio Cases Surge in Pakistan
In Pakistan, the number of polio cases is rapidly increasing, posing a significant health risk. The National Institute of Health (NIH) has confirmed the presence of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in sewage samples from eight districts, including Dera Ismail Khan, Charsadda, and Rawalpindi.
Current Situation
As of now, 63 polio cases have been reported across the country. Balochistan has the highest number of cases with 26, followed by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 18, and Sindh with 17. Punjab and Islamabad have each reported one case. The detection of the virus in sewage samples has raised concerns about a potential outbreak, especially among children.
Preventive Measures
In response, Section 144 has been imposed in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, for seven days starting December 16, to facilitate an anti-polio campaign. Deputy Commissioner Abdul Hameed announced restrictions, including a ban on firearms, two-person motorcycle rides, and tinted vehicle windows. Violators will face strict legal actions.
