Palau's President Criticizes China Ahead of Taiwanese President's Visit

Palau's President Surangel Whipps Jr. has openly criticized China for undermining his country's sovereignty. He urged Beijing to respect international law and stop using coercive tactics. This statement comes as Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te is set to visit Palau, a move that has upset China.

In an interview, Whipps highlighted Palau's strong support for Taiwan, emphasizing that their 25-year partnership will continue despite Chinese opposition. He stated, "China needs to understand that they should respect our sovereignty and our decision to choose who our friends are. You don't build friendships through intimidation and force."

China has been trying to isolate Taiwan by using economic incentives and diplomatic pressure on Pacific island nations. However, Palau has resisted these efforts, which Whipps says has led to "unfriendly behavior" from China. He accused Beijing of a major cyberattack earlier this year, where over 20,000 documents were stolen, and revealed that Chinese research vessels made illegal incursions into Palau's waters.

Palau's strategic location in the Pacific and its alliances with the US, Taiwan, and Japan have placed it at the center of geopolitical tensions between China and the West. The United States is increasing its military presence in Palau, including plans to install radar and upgrade a runway, to counter China's growing assertiveness.

Whipps condemned China's test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile into the Pacific Ocean, calling it a "clear violation of decency and respect for nations." Despite China's campaign against Taiwan, Whipps is determined to defend Palau's sovereignty and its right to maintain ties with Taipei. He hopes that Lai's visit will enhance economic cooperation in tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy, creating new opportunities for both nations.
