Myanmar Military Extends Emergency Rule Amid Ongoing Conflict
In Naypyidaw, Myanmar's military has decided to extend the state of emergency for another six months. This decision was made by the National Defence and Security Council during a meeting, just before the fourth anniversary of the military coup. The council, including the commander-in-chief and acting president, agreed unanimously under Section 425 of the 2008 constitution. The state-run MRTV announced that stability and peace are needed for a free and fair election.
On February 1, 2021, the military took control from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Since then, Amnesty International reports that over 6,000 people have been killed, more than 20,000 detained, and over 3.5 million displaced. The military has been accused of committing crimes against humanity, including torture and indiscriminate attacks. Amnesty International calls for urgent international action to ensure accountability for these atrocities.
