Mob Attacks Historic Home of Bangladesh's Founding Leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Dhaka
In Dhaka, Bangladesh, a mob vandalized the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of the country, on Wednesday evening. The incident was reported by the Dhaka Tribune. The protesters, demanding a ban on the Awami League, broke into the premises, causing significant damage. Flames were seen on one of the floors of the house.
The protest was linked to an online speech by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Social media posts had called for a "Bulldozer Procession" towards the residence if Sheikh Hasina delivered a speech. By late evening, an excavator was brought to demolish the house. Protesters arrived around 8 PM, forced their way in, and vandalized the property using hammers, crowbars, and wooden planks. They destroyed portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and damaged parts of the historic house.
Earlier in the day, Hasnat Abdullah, a leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, posted on Facebook about freeing Bangladesh from fascism. Other figures, like Sharif Osman Hadi, also warned of the attack. This was not the first attack on the Dhanmondi 32 residence; a similar incident occurred on August 5, causing destruction and fire.
