Tibetan Activist Karma Samdrup Released After 15 Years, Faces Political Restrictions
Karma Samdrup: Tibetan Environmentalist Released After 15 Years in Prison
Karma Samdrup, a well-known Tibetan environmentalist and philanthropist, has been released from prison after serving a 15-year sentence. His official release date was November 19, 2024, although some reports suggest it may have been a day earlier. Despite his release, Samdrup faces a five-year deprivation of political rights. His current location and health status are unclear.
Samdrup was arrested on January 3, 2010, after advocating for his brothers, Rinchen Samdrup and Chime Namgyal, who were detained for exposing illegal poaching in Tibet. His arrest followed a visit to his brothers in prison, suggesting retaliation for his environmental work. Initially charged with tomb excavation and cultural relic theft from 1998, these charges were revived in 2010, leading to his 15-year sentence by the Yanqi Hui Xinjiang District Court in June 2010.
During his trial, Samdrup accused Chinese police of torture to extract a confession, despite new regulations against illegal evidence collection. He reported being beaten, deprived of sleep, and drugged, causing severe physical harm. Samdrup and his brothers founded the Achung Senge Namgyal Voluntary Environmental Protection Association, recognized for its environmental efforts.
His case has highlighted China's controversial judicial practices and the suppression of environmental and human rights activism in Tibet. Rinchen Samdrup was sentenced to five years and released in 2014, while Chime Namgyal served time in a labor camp. Concerns remain about Karma Samdrup's health and treatment during his imprisonment.
