The Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM) has announced a blockade of Punjab's supply routes in Moro on February 25. This decision was made during a meeting led by Shafi Burfat. JSMM is protesting against what it calls "Punjabi imperialism" and the exploitation of Sindh's natural resources. The party claims that the rerouting of the Indus River's waters through Punjab's canals threatens Sindh's existence.
JSMM accuses the Punjabi elite of taking Sindhi lands and resources, making Sindhis a minority. It also criticizes Sindh's feudal class, particularly those linked to the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), for supporting this exploitation. The party demands Sindh's 75% share of the Indus waters, as per the 1945 Sindh-Punjab Agreement, and seeks international guarantees to uphold this agreement.
To raise awareness, JSMM will launch a campaign titled "Let Us Unite to Save Sindh, Protect Our Homeland and National Identity." This campaign will involve political activists, students, journalists, attorneys, and laborers across Sindh. On February 25, JSMM plans to shut down all traffic into Punjab, cutting off its supply lines. The party warns security forces against interference, stating that any attempts to suppress the movement will lead to more disturbances and strikes.
Key JSMM figures have been assigned roles to strengthen the movement. The Senior Vice Chairman will coordinate with other political parties in Sindh, while Vice Chairman Sajjad Shar and General Secretary Shahnawaz Bhutto will engage with the Sindhi diaspora. Intellectuals Hujjat Abbasi and Hussain Sindhi will connect with Sindh's academic and literary circles. JSMM emphasizes that their struggle is for Sindh's existence, water rights, and freedom from colonial oppression.
JSMM stands for Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz, which is a political group in Pakistan. They focus on the rights and issues of the Sindh region.
A blockade is when a group stops goods or people from moving through a certain area. In this case, JSMM wants to stop supplies from reaching Punjab.
Punjab is a region in Pakistan, known for its agriculture and industry. It is one of the country's four provinces.
Resource exploitation means using natural resources like water, minerals, or land in a way that is unfair or harmful to the people who live there.
Punjabi imperialism is a term used by some groups to describe the dominance or control of Punjab over other regions in Pakistan, like Sindh.
Shafi Burfat is the leader of the JSMM. He is known for advocating for the rights of the Sindhi people.
Indus waters refer to the water from the Indus River, which is a major river flowing through Pakistan. It is important for agriculture and daily life.
The 1945 agreement was a deal about how the water from the Indus River should be shared among different regions. JSMM claims Sindh should get 75% of this water.
