Jeju Air Crash: Missing Black Box Data and Global Condolences
In Seoul, South Korea, investigators have discovered that the black boxes from a Jeju Air Co. passenger plane crash lack crucial data from the last four minutes before the explosion. The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) found that both the flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR) stopped recording four minutes before the plane hit a localizer structure at Muan International Airport on December 29. The crash occurred at 9:03 am when the plane skidded without deploying its landing gear, striking a concrete mound. The black boxes ceased recording at 8:59 am, complicating the investigation.
Authorities emphasize that while FDR and CVR data are vital, they are not the only evidence. The investigation also includes air traffic control records, video footage, and debris analysis. The black box components were sent to the NTSB, and South Korean investigators are set to continue their work.
The crash resulted in 179 fatalities, with two survivors out of 181 passengers. Global leaders have expressed their condolences. US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru, and India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar have all shared their sympathies and support for South Korea during this difficult time.
