Bangladesh Police Address Communal Violence Claims Amid Political Unrest
In Bangladesh, police have been investigating reports of communal violence since August 2024. The Bangladesh Hindu Buddha Christian Unity Council reported 1,769 attacks on minorities, including 2,010 incidents affecting lives, properties, and places of worship. Police have verified these claims, urging victims to file complaints and ensuring their security. So far, 62 cases have been registered, and 35 individuals arrested. Investigations revealed most incidents were politically motivated, with only 20 being communal. The Council noted that 82.8% of incidents occurred on August 5, 2024, following the ousting of Hasina. Additionally, police received 134 allegations of communal violence from August 5 to January 8, 2025, leading to 53 cases and 65 arrests. The Interim Government enforces a zero-tolerance policy on communal attacks, promising victim compensation and prioritizing human rights.
