Tel Aviv [Israel], August 6: Israeli Ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, has raised concerns about reports of atrocities against minorities, including Hindus, and their temples in Bangladesh. Gilon expressed his worries in a post on X.
Bangladesh is currently experiencing significant political unrest. On August 5, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned amid mounting protests, primarily led by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs. These protests have evolved into broader anti-government demonstrations.
Earlier in the day, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar chaired an all-party meeting in Parliament to brief leaders on the developments in Bangladesh. He informed the Rajya Sabha that the Indian government is closely monitoring the situation concerning minorities in Bangladesh. Jaishankar also mentioned that Sheikh Hasina had requested approval to come to India on short notice.
Jaishankar assured the Lok Sabha that the Indian government is in close contact with the Indian community in Dhaka, which includes around 19,000 Indian nationals, of which about 9,000 are students. Most of these students returned to India in July.
In another significant development, Bangladesh's President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced the dissolution of the country's parliament to pave the way for an interim administration. Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was also released. Meanwhile, leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Dhaka have proposed an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus to address the ongoing challenges in Bangladesh.
