India Mourns Loss of Binil Babu in Russia-Ukraine Conflict

The Ministry of External Affairs of India expressed sorrow over the death of Binil Babu, an Indian national who was killed while serving in the Russian Army during the conflict against Ukraine. Efforts are underway to bring his remains back to India. Another Indian national injured in the conflict is receiving treatment in Moscow and is expected to return soon.

Indian Nationals in the Russian Army

According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, 12 Indian nationals have died while serving in the Russian Army, and 16 are missing. Out of 126 cases of Indians serving, 96 have returned to India. The Indian government is working for the early release of those still in Russia.

Human Trafficking Concerns

Many Indians were allegedly misled into joining the Russian Army under false job promises. The Central Bureau of Investigation uncovered a human trafficking network exploiting Indian nationals.

Upcoming Visit of Russian President Putin

India is set to host the annual summit with Russia, with dates to be confirmed. This will be President Putin's first visit to India since the conflict began. India continues to advocate for peace and diplomacy in resolving the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Prime Minister Modi and President Putin maintain regular contact, having met twice in 2024. PM Modi's visit to Russia included attending the BRICS Summit and receiving Russia's highest national award for strengthening ties between the two nations.
