Historic Meeting: PM Modi Visits CARICOM, Welcomed by Barbados PM Mia Mottley

Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Amor Mottley, expressed her excitement over the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it a "historic moment" for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries. The summit between India and the Caribbean island nations marks a significant event, highlighting the strong relationship between the regions.

Warm Welcome in Guyana

Upon his arrival in Guyana, PM Modi was warmly received by President Irfaan Ali, along with the Prime Ministers of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, and Barbados, Mia Mottley, as well as four ministers from Guyana. This visit is notable as PM Modi is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the Caribbean in 56 years.

About CARICOM

CARICOM is a group of 21 countries, including 15 member states and six associate members, with a population of approximately sixteen million. The community focuses on economic integration, foreign policy coordination, human and social development, and security. It was established in 1973 with the Treaty of Chaguaramas, later revised in 2002.

Strengthening Ties

Barbados and India share close relations, actively engaging in international forums like the UN and Commonwealth. Barbados has supported India's candidacy in various multilateral platforms. Approximately 3000 people of Indian origin reside in Barbados, contributing to the strong ties between the two nations.

PM Modi's Agenda

During his visit, PM Modi will address Guyana's parliament and participate in the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit. His visit follows an invitation from Guyanese President Mohammad Irfaan Ali.
