World Uyghur Congress Condemns Arrest of Pro-Democracy Activists in Hong Kong
The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has expressed strong disapproval of the Chinese government's decision to arrest pro-democracy supporters in Hong Kong. These individuals have been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison under the city's 2020 National Security Law.
Background
In July 2020, 47 former pro-democracy lawmakers and opposition activists organized a primary election to select candidates for Hong Kong's Legislative Council elections. This move was seen as a threat by the Chinese government.
WUC's Response
WUC President Turgunjan Alawdun stated, "Jailing pro-democracy key figures, who risk their freedom for democracy, as China continues to restrict key fundamental rights and allows for the shrinking of civil society, should worry all of us." He urged democratic countries to address the erosion of global rule of law and the silencing of dissidents.
