Challenges in Pakistan's Public Transport: Voices from Karachi

Public transport is vital for many people in Pakistan, especially in cities like Karachi. However, during hot weather, it becomes very uncomfortable due to the lack of basic amenities like fans and drinking water. Many buses are in poor condition, with broken windows that let in direct sunlight, making the ride unbearable.

Gul Nawaz, a regular passenger, shared his struggles with the heat on the 4-L bus. Momina Bibi, who travels on the N-4 Mazda minibus, also highlighted the poor maintenance and lack of facilities. She urged the government to improve the situation.

Professor Dr. Noman Ahmed from NED University noted that buses used to be better maintained. Economic challenges have made transport owners hesitant to invest in new or upgraded vehicles. Waheed Khan, a minibus owner, explained that rising costs and fuel prices have reduced the number of available vehicles.

Zeeshan Shah, an electrician, suggested installing fans in buses to improve comfort. Suleman Ahmed, a transport company manager, mentioned that rising fuel prices have increased fares by 25 to 30 percent in two years. Haji Tawab Khan from the Karachi Transport Union noted a significant reduction in operational routes.

A spokesperson from the Sindh Transport and Mass Transit Department assured that efforts are being made to expand the bus fleet and improve the transport system.
