Premier Cho Jung-tai Addresses Concerns Over Chinese Sailors in Taiwan's China Steel Express
On Tuesday, Premier Cho Jung-tai assured that the issue of Chinese sailors working for Taiwan's China Steel Express Corp. (CSE) will be resolved swiftly and securely. This statement was made during a legislative hearing in response to questions from Legislator Hung Sun-han. Hung raised concerns about the national security risks posed by Chinese nationals, who make up nearly 20% of CSE's workforce, especially if tensions in the Taiwan Strait increase.
Hung noted that other state-run companies like Taiwan Power Co. and CPC Corp. do not employ Chinese sailors, questioning why CSE does. He urged the Ministry of Economic Affairs to devise a plan within two months to mitigate these risks. Economics Minister Kuo Jyh-huei acknowledged the potential dangers of operational information leaks and committed to discussions with China Steel Corp. (CSC) to implement improvements.
Premier Cho supported Kuo's approach, emphasizing the need for logical and effective management of foreign sailors to safeguard national security. CSE, a subsidiary of CSC, was established in 1996 and plays a crucial role in transporting raw materials and steel products, with a capital of NT$4.225 billion (USD 130 million).
