Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced the appointment of Major General (Res.) Eyal Zamir as the new Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The announcement was made on Saturday through a post on X by the Prime Minister's Office.
Leadership Transition
Zamir will become the 24th Chief of Staff, succeeding Lt Gen Herzi Halevi, who resigned last month. Zamir is set to assume his new role on March 6. Halevi's resignation followed a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, related to a military lapse during the October 7, 2023, attack in southern Israel.

Defense Minister Israel Katz, alongside Netanyahu, considered other candidates for the position, including Maj. Gen. Amir Baram and Maj. Gen. Tamir Yadai. Halevi expressed his confidence in Zamir's leadership, stating, "I have known Eyal for many years, and I am sure that he will lead the IDF forward in the face of the expected challenges."
Ceasefire and Hostage Release
In related news, three Israeli hostages were released from Hamas captivity in Gaza as part of the ceasefire agreement. The released hostages are Yarden Bibas, Ofer Kalderon, and Keith Siegel. Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed relief and concern for other hostages still in captivity, emphasizing national solidarity and prayer for their safe return.
The ceasefire's first phase aims to free a total of 33 Israeli hostages over six weeks in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
