In Washington, DC, Daniel Ball, a Florida resident, found himself in legal trouble again just a day after receiving a full pardon from US President Donald Trump for his involvement in the January 6, 2021, US Capitol riots. Ball is now facing a federal gun charge, marking him as the first rioter to encounter new legal issues post-pardon.
Initially, Ball was charged in May 2023 with 12 counts related to the Capitol riot, including assaulting officers and using explosives. Prosecutors claimed he collaborated with others to push against police and threw an explosive device, injuring 25 officers. These charges were erased following Trump's pardon, and his new indictment focuses on firearm possession as a convicted felon, due to prior convictions for domestic violence and resisting law enforcement.
Ball is among over 1,500 individuals involved in the Capitol riots who had their charges dropped through Trump's pardons. Some leaders from the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers also received sentence reductions. On January 21, shortly after being sworn in as the 47th President, Trump granted pardons and commutations to those charged in connection with the Capitol events. Fourteen individuals, charged with seditious conspiracy and linked to far-right groups, received commutations.
The White House announced that the attorney general would issue certificates of pardon for those granted full pardons, leading to their immediate release from prison.
