Government Employees Protest Pension Cuts in Gilgit Baltistan

In Gilgit, a region in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit Baltistan (PoGB), a large group of government employees staged a protest against recent pension cuts imposed by the provincial government. The protest began at Ittihad Chowk, with participants marching towards the Chief Secretary's office, chanting slogans against the decision.

The protesters, representing various government departments, expressed their frustration, claiming the pension reductions would severely impact their livelihood after retirement. They carried banners and placards demanding an immediate rollback of the cuts.

A representative from the Line Department Association stated, "We have submitted a charter of demands to the government, and we will continue to protest until these are addressed. If our demands are not met, we will escalate the protest, and it will continue until at least June."

As the protesters advanced, law enforcement set up barricades along Khazana Road to prevent them from reaching the Chief Secretary's office. The police presence was strong, and the situation was closely monitored to prevent any incidents. Despite this, the protesters remained determined, insisting they would not relent until the government reversed its decision.

Many protesters expressed concerns that the cuts would disproportionately affect those who have dedicated years of service to the government. Although no confrontations occurred, the standoff with the police lasted several hours. The demonstrators vowed to intensify their efforts if their demands are not met. The government has not yet responded to the demands, leaving the situation uncertain.
