Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam Appeals for Safe Release of Abducted Meitei Youths in Manipur

New Delhi, India – Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging for the safe release of two Meitei youths abducted in Manipur. The MP highlighted the ongoing communal violence in Manipur since May 3, 2023, which has resulted in numerous deaths and missing persons from both the Meitei and Kuki communities.

In his letter, Akoijam detailed the abduction of three youths from Thoubal district on September 27, 2024, while they were traveling to New Keithelmanbi for an SSC GD recruitment test. The youths, Ningombam Johnson Singh, Oinam Thoithoi Singh, and Thokchom Thoithoiba Meitei, were reportedly taken by suspected Kuki armed members. While Ningombam Johnson Singh was rescued by the Assam Rifles, the other two remain in captivity.

The abductors are allegedly demanding the release of Mark T. Haokip, who is under judicial custody, and the transfer of Kuki prisoners out of Imphal jail in exchange for the hostages. Akoijam emphasized that such demands are acts of terrorism and urged the Home Minister to use all available resources to secure the safe release of the youths.

Speaking to the media, Akoijam criticized the state for failing to provide the constitutional right to life to its citizens, both Meiteis and Kukis. He called for immediate action to protect the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

Violence in Manipur began on May 3, 2023, following clashes during a rally organized by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) to protest the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category.
