Congress Chief Jitu Patwari Praises West Bengal's New Anti-Rape Bill
Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Jitu Patwari praised the West Bengal Government for introducing an anti-rape bill, calling it a positive step. He emphasized that rape cases are a societal concern and should not be politicized.
Patwari stated, "Rape cases are not for argue, it is not for ruling party or the opposition party but it is a concern for the entire society and the nation. Women of our nation are being violated and the President of India expressed concern over it; it means it is a new India of Prime Minister Narendra Modi."
He added, "If we talk about the bill then the government and the administration should make efforts to stop such incidents. I believe there should not be any politics in it, only a collective and public effort can be made and everyone should be united for it. It (anti-rape bill) is good and welcome step."
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan criticized the timing of the bill, suggesting it was a distraction from a recent incident at RG Kar Medical College. Chouhan highlighted Madhya Pradesh's earlier adoption of similar legislation in 2017, which includes the death penalty for rapists of young girls.
Chouhan remarked, "Mamata Banerjee has become insensitive. Madhya Pradesh was the first state in the country to implement the law in 2017 and has given the death penalty to those who commit rape. So far, 42 people have been given the death sentence. This bill has been brought to divert attention from the heinous crime at RG Kar Medical College."
The West Bengal Assembly unanimously passed the 'Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024' following the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor last month at the RG Kar Medical Centre and Hospital on August 9.
