Conflict in Congo: M23 Rebels and Rwandan Forces Cause Turmoil in Goma
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), at least 773 people have been killed in Goma and nearby areas due to clashes with M23 rebels. The M23 group, supported by the Rwandan Defence Force (RDF), has taken control of Goma and is advancing towards Bukavu. Congolese government spokesman Patrick Muyaya indicated that the death toll might be higher due to potential mass graves.
M23 is one of over 100 armed groups in eastern DRC, a region rich in minerals. The DRC military has pushed back the rebels in some areas but suffered heavy losses. UN Peace Operations head Jean-Pierre Lacroix warned of a potential wider regional conflict and stressed the need for diplomatic efforts to cease hostilities.
India expressed concern for its citizens in the DRC, with around 25,000 Indians residing there, including 1,000 in Goma. Most have moved to safer locations, and the Indian Embassy has issued advisories and helplines.
DRC President Felix Tshisekedi promised a "vigorous" military response against the rebels and their supporters, following the capture of Goma by M23 rebels.
