In 2024, Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) reported a significant increase in public transport usage, with 747.1 million riders, a 6.4% rise from 2023. The services included Dubai Metro, Tram, buses, marine transport, shared mobility, and taxis. Daily ridership surpassed 2 million, with luxury transport services reaching 19 million users. Taxis accounted for over 115 million trips, while shared mobility services recorded 32 million trips. October and November saw the highest trip volumes, each with 14.1 million trips.
Mattar Al Tayer, RTA's Director-General, highlighted the growth in public transport, citing investments in infrastructure like the Dubai Metro and Tram. The bus network expanded to 3,974 km, supported by a modern fleet of 1,400 buses. The marine transport system was also enhanced. In December, RTA awarded a contract for the Dubai Metro Blue Line, a 30-km project connecting 14 stations, to start in April.
RTA plans to expand bus and taxi lanes by 2026, aiming to increase ridership by 10% and improve bus arrival times by 42%. A trackless tram system and self-driving buses are also being explored. Dubai Metro remained the most popular, with 37% of ridership, followed by taxis at 27% and buses at 25%. Shared mobility services grew to 7.5%.
BurJuman and Union stations had the highest ridership on the Metro, while Al Rigga led the Red Line and Sharaf DG the Green Line. Public buses transported 187.7 million riders, marine transport 18 million, and Dubai Tram 9.4 million. Shared mobility services surged by 28%, carrying 56 million riders, and taxis transported 200.6 million riders.
