In Shyamnagar upazila, Satkhira District, Bangladesh, a conflict between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) resulted in at least 22 injuries, including police officers and security personnel. The clash occurred despite the imposition of Section 144 by authorities to prevent violence.
The violence erupted in the Ismailpur area when tensions rose between the newly formed Shyamnagar BNP committee and the dissolved committee. The new committee organized a rally, which the dissolved committee attempted to stop. Solaiman Kabir, former acting general secretary of the Upazila BNP, led a procession that was attacked, sparking the clash.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Roni Khatun and Assistant Commissioner Abdullah Al Rifat, along with police, tried to intervene but were unable to prevent the violence. Injuries included Shyamnagar police station's officer in charge, Humayun Kabir, and security personnel Saiful Islam.
Solaiman Kabir accused the dissolved committee and Awami League activists of attacking his supporters. He also blamed Abdul Alim, district BNP member secretary, for inciting violence. On the other hand, Ashik-e-Elahi Munna from the dissolved committee alleged that Solaiman's group disrupted a meeting and attacked his house.
Abdul Wahed, president of the dissolved Upazila BNP committee, demanded an investigation into the clashes and called for justice.
