Karachi is facing a severe water crisis as a pipeline at the Dhabeji pumping station has developed a new leak. This issue has been reported by the Express Tribune. The situation is made worse by reduced water supply at government hydrants and halted operations at several regional pumping stations. As a result, residents are forced to buy water from tankers at high prices.
A spokesperson for the Water Corporation stated that two pipelines were affected due to a power breakdown, leading to a significant shortfall of 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water, totaling 300 million gallons over the past three days. Although repair work on line number 5 began on Wednesday, a leak was found, and repairs are ongoing. Work on line number 01 has not yet started.
The city's water supply system depends on 24 pumps, but only 14 are currently operational, worsening the crisis. Many areas in the city are experiencing severe water shortages, affecting both residents and businesses. The ongoing repairs and limited pump availability continue to disrupt the daily water supply, leaving citizens in urgent need of alternative solutions.
Earlier on Monday, Karachi faced a water shortfall of 100 million gallons per day due to an unexpected power outage at the Dhabeji Pumping Station, which halted all operations. The Dhabeji Pumping Station, managed by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), is vital for supplying water to Karachi. However, it has faced ongoing maintenance and technical problems over the past decade, causing frequent disruptions in the city's water supply.
Karachi is a large city in Pakistan, which is a country next to India. It is one of the biggest cities in Pakistan and has many people living there.
A water crisis means there is not enough water for people to use. This can happen when there is a problem with the water supply, like a leak or not enough rain.
The Dhabeji Pumping Station is a place where water is pumped and sent to different parts of Karachi. If there is a problem here, it can affect the water supply for many people.
A pipeline leak means that water is escaping from a pipe where it shouldn't be. This can cause less water to reach the people who need it.
Government hydrants are places where people can get water provided by the government. If these have less water, it means people have to find other ways to get water.
Tanker water is water that is delivered in large trucks called tankers. People buy this water when they can't get enough from their regular supply.
A power breakdown means that there is a problem with electricity, which can stop machines from working. In this case, it affected the water pipelines.
A shortfall means there is less of something than needed. Here, it means there is less water available than what people need.
Operational pumps are pumps that are working properly. If only some pumps are operational, it means not all pumps are working, which can reduce the water supply.
