The PLA operates the world's largest naval fleet, with 370 ships and submarines, and 1,300 fourth-generation fighters. Yet, its ability to conduct joint warfare is limited by unresolved organizational issues. The PLA lacks a unified network for intelligence sharing and coordinated maneuvers.
Future Prospects
Xi's anti-corruption campaigns may delay the PLA's 2027 modernization goals, but combat readiness has improved. Military drills focus on Taiwan Strait crises, enhancing capabilities for a potential invasion. However, the US does not see an imminent threat of invasion, as China cannot yet ensure a decisive victory with acceptable losses.
Strategic Concerns
China's primary concern is US intervention, leading to an increase in intercontinental and medium-range ballistic missiles. However, its short-range missile stock has decreased, possibly due to exercises.
