Bangladesh interim govt seeks removal of Sheikh Hasina's daughter from WHO
Bangladesh's Interim Government Moves to Remove Saima Wazed from WHO Amid Political Turmoil
In Bangladesh, the interim government is preparing to remove Saima Wazed, daughter of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, from her role as the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for South-East Asia. Saima, a psychologist based in Delhi, was appointed on January 23, 2024. However, she is under investigation by Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for alleged corruption. An official mentioned that letters are ready to be sent to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to initiate her removal.
Last year, a student-led movement led to the ousting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, resulting in over 600 deaths. Hasina fled to India, and Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus now leads the interim government. Despite the government change, a lawyer in Dhaka noted that individuals elected to United Nations bodies remain in their positions regardless of political shifts.
The political unrest in Bangladesh has also impacted international politics. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer faced a setback with the resignation of anti-corruption minister Tulip Siddiq, Hasina's niece, who was involved in an embezzlement investigation. Siddiq stated on social media that an independent review cleared her of any wrongdoing, but she resigned to avoid distractions for the government.
Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India since August 5. The ongoing investigations and political instability have drawn global attention, yet Saima Wazed continues her role at WHO as the case unfolds.
