On January 6, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed concerns about potential cooperation between Russia and North Korea. Speaking at a joint press conference in Seoul with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul, Blinken highlighted the possibility of Moscow sharing advanced space and satellite technology with Pyongyang. He warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin might reverse long-standing policies by accepting North Korea's nuclear weapons program.
Blinken stated, "We have reasons to believe that Moscow intends to share advanced space and satellite technology with Pyongyang. Putin may be close to reversing a decades-long policy by accepting DPRK's nuclear weapons program." This issue is a significant concern for the United States, South Korea, and Japan.
The remarks came as North Korea launched a suspected hypersonic missile into the East Sea. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff detected the launch of a suspected intermediate-range ballistic missile from the Pyongyang area, which traveled approximately 1,100 kilometers before landing in the sea. The missile shared features with North Korea's previously tested hypersonic missiles.
Blinken is visiting South Korea, Japan, and France from January 4-9. The US Department of State stated that Blinken will discuss strengthening efforts to promote a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region and enhance trilateral cooperation with Japan.
