Altaf Hussain Condemns Pakistan's New PECA Act Amendment Bill 2025

Altaf Hussain, the founder and leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), has voiced strong opposition to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) Act Amendment Bill 2025. He criticized the bill, passed by the Pakistan Muslim League (N) government, as a "draconian law" that infringes on human rights and suppresses freedom of expression.

In a statement from London, Hussain described the legislation as a "grave violation of citizens' rights," targeting journalists and citizens by limiting their freedom of expression. He compared the government's actions to martial law, accusing them of using force to suppress speech and press freedom.

Hussain shared his personal experience of being banned from publishing and broadcasting his work since 2015, despite seeking justice through the courts. He accused the government of authoritarian practices, including restricting media and targeting journalists who speak the truth.

He criticized the lack of consultation with journalistic organizations on the bill, which has caused outrage among journalists. Hussain called the bill an "attack on democracy" and expressed his support for the journalist community in their fight for press freedom.

Hussain concluded by reaffirming his commitment to resisting attempts to suppress media freedom and supporting journalists in their struggle.
