On Monday, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Prashant Kumar announced that new criminal laws are being implemented smoothly across the state. He mentioned that two First Information Reports (FIRs) have already been registered under the new laws in the districts of Amroha and Raebareli.
DGP Kumar highlighted the proactive steps taken by the police to ensure a seamless transition. The technical wing has completed networking arrangements and provided necessary software. Special events have been organized at all police stations to inform public representatives, police personnel, and local citizens about the new laws.
The new criminal laws, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Sanhita, came into effect from July 1. Information about these laws has been uploaded on YouTube and social media platforms. Posters and pamphlets have also been distributed to raise awareness.
DGP Kumar clarified that ongoing cases or those under investigation will not be affected by the new laws. The previous laws will continue to apply to these cases.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized opposition parties for opposing the new laws and urged them to support the new acts. The three new laws were approved by Parliament on December 21, 2023, and received the President's assent on December 25, 2023.
