US Secretary of State Marco Rubio Declines G20 Summit in South Africa
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced he will not attend the upcoming G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. He expressed concerns over South Africa's actions, such as the expropriation of private property. Rubio criticized the use of the G20 platform to promote "solidarity, equality, and sustainability," which he equates to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and climate change initiatives.
Rubio stated, "I will not attend the G20 summit in Johannesburg. South Africa is doing very bad things. Expropriating private property. Using G20 to promote 'solidarity, equality, & sustainability.' In other words: DEI and climate change." He emphasized his duty to protect America's national interests, saying, "My job is to advance America's national interests, not waste taxpayer money or coddle anti-Americanism."
The G20 includes 19 countries such as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkiye, United Kingdom, and United States. These countries represent 85% of global GDP, over 75% of international trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.
South Africa holds the G20 Presidency from December 1, 2024, to November 2025. The presidency rotates annually among members, selected from different regional groupings. The 19 member countries are divided into five groups, mostly based on regional proximity, except for Group 1 (Australia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and the United States) and Group 2 (India, Russia, South Africa, and Turkiye).
