The World Uyghur Congress has praised the United States for adding 37 companies to the US Entity List under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA). This move aims to stop the import of goods linked to forced labor in China's autonomous region.
The companies added to the list are major players in solar energy, textiles, and mining. Many of these companies are connected to the exploitation of Uyghur and other ethnic minority groups in East Turkistan. Among them is Huafu Fashion Co, a leading textile manufacturer, along with 25 of its subsidiaries.
The US has accused Chinese authorities of using forced labor in producing goods like apparel, solar panels, and electronics, which are exported worldwide. The UFLPA, enacted in December 2021 under President Joe Biden, aims to prevent the import of products made with forced labor. This decision aligns with international pressure on China over its treatment of Uyghurs, which the US has termed as genocide.
In August 2022, UN expert Tamoya Obokata confirmed evidence of forced labor involving Uyghurs in sectors like agriculture and manufacturing. By expanding the Entity List, the Biden administration seeks to ensure US consumers do not support human rights abuses through their purchases.
The Entity List is a list of companies and organizations that the US government has identified as being involved in activities that are against US national security or foreign policy interests. Companies on this list face restrictions on their ability to do business with US companies.
The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act is a law in the United States that aims to stop goods made with forced labor from the Uyghur region in China from being imported into the US. It is meant to protect human rights and prevent exploitation.
The World Uyghur Congress is an international organization that represents the Uyghur people, who are a minority ethnic group in China. They work to raise awareness about the human rights issues faced by Uyghurs.
Uyghurs are a Muslim ethnic group living primarily in the Xinjiang region of China. There have been reports of human rights abuses against them, including forced labor and detention.
The Biden administration refers to the current government of the United States, led by President Joe Biden. They are responsible for making and enforcing laws and policies in the US.
