A terrible road accident in southern Ethiopia has resulted in the deaths of at least 71 people. The incident occurred when a truck, overloaded with passengers, fell into a river in Sidama state, about 300 kilometers from Addis Ababa, the capital city.
The Sidama Police Commission Traffic Prevention and Control Directorate reported that 68 men and three women lost their lives in the accident. The regional communication bureau initially reported 60 deaths and mentioned that survivors were receiving treatment at Bona General Hospital.
Images from the Sidama Regional Health Bureau show the chaotic aftermath, with the vehicle partially submerged and people trying to rescue it from the water. Some bodies were seen on the ground, covered with blue tarpaulin.
The Sidama Regional Health Bureau expressed condolences to the victims' families and promised to provide more information. The accident happened around 5:30 pm local time on Sunday. Some passengers were returning from a wedding, and some families lost multiple members. The truck's overload is believed to have caused the accident, but the exact number of passengers is unknown.
