Dechen Phakdon, a Tibetan activist, expressed sorrow over the tragedy, stating, "We are sad and devastated that we have lost more than 128 lives of our Tibetan brothers and sisters." The prayer session lasted for twelve hours, from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am, and was led by Tibetan monks and nuns. Tenzin Lekdhen, another activist, emphasized the importance of the prayers, saying, "We are here in solidarity with those who have passed away."
The earthquake, which occurred on January 7, also affected Nepal, Bhutan, and parts of northern India. It was followed by 49 aftershocks and destroyed over 1000 houses. The epicenter was in Shigatse, a holy city in Tibet.
