In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, senior police officials have reported that terrorists are concentrating their activities in the southern districts due to their proximity to Afghanistan. These districts include Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu, and Lakki Marwat. A meeting chaired by Provincial Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati, attended by lawmakers and police officials, highlighted the challenges faced by the police in controlling these areas.
Police Chief Akhtar Hayat Khan briefed the attendees on the current law and order situation, revealing that about 30% of Dera Ismail Khan is under some level of militant control. The police face difficulties patrolling areas like Kulachi and Draband, where militants are active at night.
The police are leading operations in most merged districts, except Bajaur, where the military is in charge. The police chief noted the presence of approximately 4,000 terrorists, including Afghan nationals, and 188 militant formations in the region. Despite arrests, the justice system has been criticized for not punishing terrorists effectively.
Lawmakers questioned the lack of increased checkposts and the police's capacity to handle heavily armed terrorists. Suggestions were made to allocate military funds for police training and equipment. The police chief mentioned developing district-specific strategies and the need for political leadership to prioritize security issues.
Further briefings by the inspector general of the Frontier Corps and the Peshawar corps commander are planned to address the security situation in more detail.
