In 2024, South Korean carmakers reached a new milestone in domestic sales of eco-friendly vehicles, largely due to the rising popularity of hybrid models. The country's five major car manufacturers—Hyundai Motor, Kia, GM Korea, KG Mobility, and Renault Korea Motors—sold a total of 450,194 eco-friendly cars, marking an 11.3% increase from the previous year.
Hybrid vehicles were the star performers, with sales reaching 356,058 units, a 25% increase from the previous year. These models made up 88% of the total eco-friendly car sales.
In contrast, sales of electric vehicles fell by 21.2% to 91,385 units. Hydrogen fuel cell cars also saw a significant drop, with sales decreasing by 36.4% to just 2,751 units.
An industry official noted that despite the decline in electric vehicle sales, the demand for eco-friendly cars remained strong, driven by the impressive sales of hybrid models.
Eco-friendly cars are vehicles that are designed to have less harmful effects on the environment. They use alternative fuels or technologies, like electricity or hybrid engines, to reduce pollution.
Hybrid models are cars that use two types of power: a traditional petrol or diesel engine and an electric motor. This combination helps save fuel and reduce pollution.
Electric vehicles, or EVs, are cars that run entirely on electricity. They don't use petrol or diesel, so they produce no pollution while driving.
Hydrogen fuel cell cars use hydrogen gas to produce electricity, which powers the car. They only emit water vapor, making them very clean for the environment.
South Korean carmakers are companies from South Korea that manufacture cars. Some well-known ones are Hyundai and Kia.
Record sales mean the highest number of cars sold in a particular category or time period. In this case, it refers to the most eco-friendly cars sold by South Korean carmakers in 2024.
