On December 21, BJP State Vice President Narayanan Thirupathy criticized Balaji for not resigning amidst the ongoing case. Thirupathy highlighted that the Supreme Court had noted the absence of a forensic officer at the hearing and accused Balaji of influencing the proceedings. The next hearing is set for January 2025, and Thirupathy warned of potential consequences if Balaji does not resign.
On December 20, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Tamil Nadu government concerning a plea to recall its decision granting bail to Balaji in a money laundering case linked to a cash-for-jobs scam. Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih requested details about pending cases against Balaji and the number of witnesses involved, including public servants and common citizens. The next hearing is scheduled for January 15.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) informed the court that Balaji's reappointment as a Cabinet Minister after his release exerted undue pressure on witnesses. The court expressed concern over Balaji's ministerial position potentially intimidating victims. Despite finding a prima facie case against Balaji, the court granted him bail due to his long incarceration since June 2023 and the unlikely commencement of the trial soon. Balaji was arrested on June 14, 2023, in connection with a money laundering case during his tenure as Transport Minister in the AIADMK regime.
