Karachi and Lahore Face Severe Cold and Smog Crisis

The bustling city of Karachi in Pakistan is experiencing a significant drop in temperature, reaching as low as 9.5°C, along with poor air quality. The city's air quality index (AQI) stands at 199, which is considered "unhealthy" by IQAir, a Swiss air quality monitor. Major cities like Karachi and Lahore are struggling with severe smog as a cold wave grips the country.

In Karachi, temperatures have fallen below 10°C for the second time this month, with winds blowing at 8 km/h from the northwest and humidity at 41%. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had predicted a temperature drop of 3°C to 4°C in southeastern Sindh, worsening the cold conditions.

Lahore, facing persistent smog for weeks, is now the second most polluted city globally, with an AQI of 303, classified as "hazardous" by IQAir. This severe air pollution poses major health risks, prompting authorities to advise residents, especially vulnerable groups, to limit outdoor activities.

Other regions like Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are also experiencing unusually low temperatures. In Quetta, Balochistan's capital, temperatures have dropped to -4°C, with similar readings in cities like Kalat and Turbat.

The combination of smog, low temperatures, and high pollution levels presents significant health risks, highlighting the urgent need for action to address this growing crisis. Residents in major cities are advised to take precautions to protect their respiratory health as the smog continues to affect urban areas.
